COYOTES ROLL TO CHAMPIONSHIP IN FIRST SEASON

By Wiley Coyote

03/06/14   ANAHEIM – The Capistrano United Coyotes (17-0-1) kept both feet on the gas-peddle dominating the Damien Spartans from start to finish while rolling to a 9-3 victory over the Damien Spartans (8-9-2) in the Championship game played at the Honda Center.  The Coyotes, a first year varsity program formed last June and expected by most to finish near the bottom of the standings, came out of nowhere to set ADHSHL records with 27 playoff goals (3 games) and 101 regular season goals (15 games), while going undefeated in regulation play.

In the Championship game the Coyotes were firing on all cylinders with goals from five different players and reinforced their depth with ten players combining for 23 points (9G, 14A).  As was the theme in all but one game this season, the Coyotes jumped out fast to score first, this time with two goals in the first five minutes.  Just three minutes into the game Paul Boutoussov created a turnover deep in the Spartans zone and fed Zach Wolivar who used his quickness and reach to beat the Spartans goalie for his fourth goal of the playoffs.  Then a minute later Keenan Haase (Assists:  Jacob Dopudja, Connor Reed) ripped home his fourth goal of the playoffs as well.  Damien would counter with a goal of their own to give hope to the underdog team and their fans.

However, it took less than a minute for the ADHSHL leading scorer, Connor Reed, to remind everyone in the building just how quick and often the Coyotes can strike.  Proving why he is the top scorer in the league, Reed finessed and powered his way to two goals (Assists: Cameron McCartin, Jacob Fricks), including the eventual game winner, to give the Coyotes a commanding 4-1 lead after the first period.

The Coyotes continued their offensive prowess outscoring their opponents 4-1 in the second period.  Colin Kennedy (Assists: Ty Gardner, P. Boutoussov) scored on a slapshot blast from the blue line.  Then it was the Paul Boutoussov show, as the senior provided everyone in attendance with an offensive performance for the ages.  Scoring the final four Coyotes goals in a twelve minute span, (Assists: Wolivar - 3, Reed -1, Kennedy - 1, Alec Grollman -1) including a marquee between the legs goal that left the crowd buzzing.  Boutoussov's 11 points (6G, 5A) in three games, led all playoff scorers and was named winner of the SportsNetUsa Championship MVP Award.

For leading the first year Coyotes to the Varsity 2A Season Title and Varsity 2A Championship Title head coach Darren Gardner was named winner of the SportsNetUsa Coach Of The Year Award.

The National anthem was performed by Tesoro High School senior Addy Brongo.  Who was also undefeated this season!
