Lancers defeat Santa Margarita 5-4 in Championship

Congratulations to the Orange Lutheran Lancers for winning the JSerra Annual Thanksgiving Hockey Tournament! The Lancers went undefeated in tournament play. Read below for the full story:

OLu completed a successful run in the JSerra Annual Thanksgiving Tournament by going a perfect 6-0. The Tournament started off on the right foot as OLu defeated the Damien Spartans 7- 0 to kick start the Lancers run to the Championship Game. The Lancers finished pool play with a perfect 4 - 0 record to capture the No. 1 seed in pool B.

The Lancers would face St. John's the Pool A second seed in the semi's. This game was intense from the start with the visitors from Canada getting on the board first. OLu would score the next 2 goals to take a 2 to 1 lead late into the game. St. John tied it back up with five minutes to go in the game. This game would see a scoreless sudden death OT which resulted in a shootout to determine the winner. Jacob Heller of OLu got the Lancer's off on the right start as he connected on his shootout attempt. St.John's shooter also scored on their first attempt to even the shoot out up at one. Coach Adams rolled the dice & had Freshman Defenseman Ryan Fischer as his second shooter of the shootout and the youngster delivered putting the Lancers up 2 to 1. From their Lancer's goalie Alexander Frosh shut the door and stoned the next two St. John shooters to secure the victory for OLu. The victory set the stage for the Lancers to play their local rivals Santa Margarita High School in the Finals.

The Championship was a barn burner from the start with OLu dominating the opening frame; jumping out to a 2 - 0 lead at the end of the 1st period. Santa Margarita showed the heart of a champion and responded with three unanswered goals in the 2nd period to take the lead heading into the third period. The Lancers countered early in the 3rd period with an early goal to tie the game up at three. From there OLu & Santa Margarita traded goals to force a tie late into the game. With 1:05 left in the game the Lancers scored the game-winning goal which proved to be the difference!
